Description

Eriosyce recondita is a species of plant in the genus Eriosyce of the cactus family (Cactaceae). The specific epithet recondita means 'hidden, hidden'. Eriosyce recondita usually grows individually with almost spherical to spherical, gray to dark green shoots and reaches a diameter of 2 to 10 centimeters. The root is an often heavily thickened taproot. There are 10 to 13 ribs, which are notched and thereby form bumps. The areoles on it are often sunken. The thin thorns are needle-like. The one or two central spines are 1 to 1.5 centimeters, the six to ten radial spines 5 to 10 millimeters long. The funnel-shaped flowers are white to slightly pink to yellow and appear from young areoles. They are 1.5 to 4 centimeters long and have a diameter of 2 to 3.5 centimeters. Their pericarpel and floral tube are lined with wool and sometimes bristles. The elongated fruits open with a basal pore. Eriosyce recondita is distributed in the Chilean regions of Tarapacá and Antofagasta in coastal areas. The first description as Pyrrhocactus reconditus was made in 1962 by Friedrich Ritter. Fred Kattermann placed the species in the genus Eriosyce in 1994. Other nomenclatural synonyms are Neochilenia recondita (F.Ritter) Backeb. (1963) and Neoporteria recondita (F.Ritter) Donald & GDRowley (1966). In the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, the species is classified as " Vulnerable (VU) ". H. listed as endangered.
