Description

The psyllium, (Plantago psyllium), is a natural herbaceous species of the western Mediterranean, especially Spain and Morocco, also found in South Asia The generic name of this plant derives from "planta" which in Latin means "foot" and from the verb "ago", which means paecíu, that is, similar to a foot because of the appearance of the fires on the sole of the foot. It is a deciduous herbal plant with an erect and branching tarmu. The bellows are elongated, narrow, opposite or whorled three by three. The flowers, white or whitish in color, produce three spikes. Speck with 4 sepals and tubular corolla with 4 petals. The grains are pixidia with two ovoid brown grains. It is found on farmland, along roadsides, in apatayaos places, in fields rich in organic fertilizers or farms. The grains of this plant are used medicinally. The grains contain mucilages (12%-15%), formed fundamentally by xylose, galacturonic acid, arabinose and rhamnose, which give the laxative property, but unlike other Plantago species, they do not contain starch; it also has traces of alkaloids such as plantagonine, indicaine, llomba, noscapine and indicamine; we found phytosterols such as beta-sitosterol, campestrol, stigmasterol; also trace elements, potassium salts, unsaturated oil (5 to 10%), proteins (15-18%) and an iridoid glycoside l' aucubina to which some protective properties are attributed to the fegadu. Melecinal virtues It contains mucilages that, in contact with water, increase its volume up to 4 times, which is why it is an excellent mechanical laxative that acts as a lubricant that allows fecal matter to slide. Encamentáu in case of lack of intestinal peristalsis. Externally in the form of compresses to treat rheumatism, burns and ulcers. It can lower total cholesterol and LDL thanks to its psyllium content.
