(Armeria caespitosa)
The serrano hedgehog ( Armeria caespitosa ) is a plant of the genus Armeria . Of padded aspect, that grows stuck to the ground to support the climatic conditions of the zones of summits. Its leaves are hard and pointed, true needles , arranged in densely crowded rosettes , like the thorns of a hedgehog , hence its vulgar name. The flowers have a long stem that protrudes above the rest of the plant forming a bouquet . The flowers range from pale pink to intense. The mountain hedgehog is an endemic plant in the mountains of central Spain: Sierras de Guadarrama , Gredos , Béjar and La Serrota . It grows on the peaks , in areas very hit by the wind, on siliceous soils.
