England , the Mediterranean region ; America . It is a perennial plant 10-50 cm high. Very dark, with a thick woody stem , the stems strong, almost woody at the base, flat, with nerves; elliptic-lanceolate, leathery leaves, with broad pods, usually longer than internodes; flowers whitish or pink, 1-4 subsessile in the axils of the leaves.
