Astronauts are growing blood vessels in space

02-10-2019

Today’s Video of the Day from the European Space Agency describes research carried out in space that may ultimately help to treat many serious diseases.

The experts hope to gain a better understanding of cell growth and structure, which could lead to the development of techniques to replace damaged blood vessels.

The Spheroids experiment took place on the International Space Station during the ESA’s Principia mission in 2016.

The astronauts managed to cultivate cells in microgravity that assembled into structures similar to the inner lining of blood vessels – an accomplishment which has not yet been achieved back on Earth.
