Today’s Video of the Day from the U.S. Geological Survey shows the severe damage caused by mountain pine beetles in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

The pink coloring, which becomes increasingly prevalent across the chronological images, represents large areas of dead or dying trees in the region’s ponderosa pine forests.
