Coastal erosion in the Canadian Arctic

06-10-2019

Today’s Video of the Day from the University of Edinburgh shows the extent of coastal permafrost erosion in the Canadian Arctic.

The researchers flew cameras mounted on drones over the coastline of the Herschel Island Qikiqtaruk Territorial Park in Yukon Territory.

Using images captured during the summer of 2017, the team found that the coast had retreated by 14.5 meters in just 40 days. In some cases, they observed the loss of more than a meter of coastline in a single day.

“As the Arctic continues to warm faster than the rest of our planet, we need to learn more about how these landscapes are changing,” said study lead author Dr. Andrew Cunliffe. “Using drones could help researchers and local communities improve monitoring and prediction of future changes in the region.”
