Semarang, Indonesia from space

11-03-2018

Today’s Video of the Day from the European Space Agency features the city of Semarang, Indonesia from space.

Semarang, a port city on the north coast of Java, is the fifth-largest city in the country with just over 1.5 million people.
The city hosts a range of industries from fishing to textiles.

The city’s harbor, which is visible in the bottom-left of the image, is an important hub for rubber, coffee, tobacco, cacao, and shrimp exports.

This region is particularly vulnerable to sea-level rise, as some areas of Semarang are just above sea level.

The image was captured by the The Copernicus Sentinel-2B satellite on May 9, 2018.
