The 2021 hurricane season was one of the most active

12-22-2021

The 2021 hurricane season was one of the most active Today’s Video of the Day from the USGS describes the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season, which was the third most active season in recorded history. Out of 21 named storms, seven developed into full-blown hurricanes.

The 2021 Atlantic season will also go down in history as one of the most expensive hurricane seasons. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Hurricane Ida alone accounts for more than $60 billion in damages. This makes it one of the five most costly U.S. hurricanes since 1980.

This year marked the first time on record that two consecutive hurricane seasons had 21 named storms, and the sixth consecutive Atlantic season that was more active than normal.

The USGS deployed crews and experts across the country to provide resources to emergency managers.
