The Gangotri Glacier from space

01-19-2019

Today’s Video of the Day from the European Space Agency features a look at India’s Gangotri Glacier as it appears from space on January 7, 2018.

Located in the state of Uttarakhand, the Gangotri Glacier is one of the largest glaciers in the Himalayas as well as one of the primary water sources for the Ganges River.

Gangotri is in a region known as “the third pole,” where the ice fields contain the largest freshwater reserves outside of the North and South Poles.

The image was captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission.
