The Great Rift Valley of East Africa

05-24-2020

Today’s Video of the Day from the European Space Agency features a Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellite view of the Great Rift Valley in Kenya.

The landscape of the Great Rift Valley is essentially splitting apart as a result of earthquakes volcanic eruptions. Many of the volcanoes in the region are still active.

Lake Baringo, one of the two freshwater lakes in the Rift Valley, is visible at the top of the image. There are several small volcanic islands throughout Baringo, including Ol Kokwe in the center of the lake.

To the south, Lake Bogoria supports over one million flamingoes and more than 300 waterbird species. Bogoria is famous for its surrounding geysers and hot springs.
