Description

The passenger pigeon, dove Carolina or passenger pigeon ( passenger pigeon ) was a species of bird, now extinct, who belonged to the order of Columbiformes, the same group in which are classified doves and pigeons common. It is the animal that has suffered the most pronounced population decline in recent history, because in a single century it went from being the most abundant bird in North America (and perhaps in the world) 2To swell the list of extinct species.Their great flocks of thousands of individuals darkened the light and heat in their wake, and the flutter produced breeze and noise. The migratory pigeon or migratory dove ( Ectopistes migratorius ( Linnaeus,1766) ),now extinct, was a bird between 30 and 46 cm long, widespread in the past in North America even if it is thought to be rare before of the 16th century at the beginning of the 20th century became extinct. In spite of the Italian name and the English name of Passenger pigeon,it was not really a pigeon, but rather a dove, closely related to the mourning tortures of the genus Zenaida.
