Mindanao bleeding-heart

(Gallicolumba crinigera)

Description

The stabbed pigeon of Mindanao ( Gallicolumba crinigera ),also known as the bleeding heart of Bartlett,is a species of columbiform bird of the family Columbidae endemic to the Philippines. It's called that because it has a red spot on its chest. The name of the genus derives from a fusion of the Latin gallus («chicken») and columba («pigeon»).The species is about 29 cm long and weighs 184 to 204 g.Front, pileus, nape and mantle are metallic green,a little more muted on the forehead and sides of the head. From the back to the rump is a brown with green stripes. The feathers of the upper and central coverts of the tail are violet brown, the chin and throat are white. The most striking is a reddish spot (similar to blood) on the chest, hence the common name. The lower part of the chest to the lower tail is a rusty orange,a little darker on the chest and flanks and paler on the belly. The lower wing is brown and blackish at the edges. The wing shield is a dull brown with great tips that make three different wing bars. The sexes are similar in appearance although there may be some dimorphism in iris colouration. The juveniles are dark brown or reddish brown with some metallic stripes on the mantle and scapular.
