Description

The whale minor Antarctic ( Balaenoptera bonaerensis Burmeister,1867 ),or the lower southern whale,is one of the species most common family of Balaenopteridae. The Antarctic minor whale is one of the smallest representatives of the Balenotteridae family,as well as one of the smaller Mysticetes.Among the Balenotterids only the common minor ballytera is smaller, and among the Misticeti the caperea has even smaller dimensions. Its length varies between 7.2 and 10.7 meters and the weight between 5.8 and 9.1 tons.On average females are about one meter longer than males. At birth they measure between 2.4 and 2.8 meters. The back is dark gray and the belly is white. On both sides there is a lighter gray stripe extending from the back to the belly. The slats are dark in color, with a white front edge. The Antarctic minor whale differs from the common one in various aspects. It has slightly larger dimensions and, unlike the other, does not have the white band on the slats. It also presents less obvious differences in body color and shape.
