Description

The loggerhead torcaza ( Patagioenas inornata ),also known as wild dove,dove ashen or stupid pigeon,one is a species of bird columbiforme of the family Columbidae living in Cuba,Isla de la Juventud (Cuba),the Spanish,Isla Tortuga ( Haiti ),Jamaica,Puerto Rico.In Cuba it is the largest of the pigeons and also the most threatened.It is also called Columba inornata.It measures about 38 cm long (somewhat smaller female).The male has the head,the back of the neck,the chest,the upper abdomen and the large wing coverts of light violet brown.The upper back and throat are lighter and more opaque.The smaller and middle coverts are brownish gray.The lower back,the rump and the rest of the abdomen are light blue-gray that lightens towards the flanks.The feathers rowers and tail are gray.The beak is blackish.The eye has a white lead iris and a reddish sclera.The legs are reddish.The female is similar but more opaque.The immatures are a predominantly brownish gray color that is lighter in the abdomen and under the rump.They are grouped in bands.They are little unruly and do not disband when they are shot.
