Description

Glirulus japonicus is a rodents in the family of sleeping mice and the only species in their genus.The species resembles hasselmus in appearance and reaches a body length of 65 to 80 millimeters.In addition,a 40 to 55 millimeter long yvig tail.The weight is between 14 and 40 grams.The fur has an olive green to brown on the top,the underside is lighter.On the back there is a longitudinal dark streak.All fingers (four per foot) and toes (five per foot) are equipped with small curved claws that provide a good grip when the animal climbs in the vegetation.Glirulus japonicus is endemic to Japan,where it lives in the woods of the mountain stretches up to 1,800 meters above sea level.It's called Japanese for Yamane.The animal is active between dusk and dawn.Glirulus japonicus rests on the day in round beech,which is hidden in the cavities of the trees,among the vegetation,under the ground or in the crack of boulders.The food consists of fruits,seeds,insects and bird eggs.Before winter,it creates fat reserves and may go into hibernation for up to seven months.It can also be found in human buildings.Shortly after the winter will begin the mating season.Hanes and females find each other with their help.The pregnancy lasts about a month and in June or July,the female usually feeds four kids.They are first blind and open their eyes after about 18 days.With the age of 4 to 6 weeks the kids become independent.After about a year they are sexually mature.The life expectancy is usually between 3 and 6 years.
