Description

The Mediterranean tree frog (Hyla meridionalis Boettger,1874) is an amphibious anuran belonging to the family of Ilidi. The Mediterranean tree frog is an Ilide usually green in uniform grass, with a relatively short and round head, smooth and shiny skin and long legs.In rare cases the upper parts may also appear spotted or whitish, gray or blue. The toes of the anterior and posterior fingers are dilated to disk, besides the back legs are palmate. The eardrums are clearly distinguishable and the pupils have a horizontal oval shape. The dark sideband is much shorter than in the common tree frog : it starts from the nostriland, passing through the eardrum, reaches its maximum until the anterior leg is inserted;therefore there is not even a dorsal loop. The belly is granulated, white or light gray, with the inner sides of the yellowish femurs. The throat of the male of the Mediterranean frog is brownish-yellowish,and when gracida highlights a large vowel sac, often with greenish edges. The female's throat is instead greenish-white.The length is 4-5 cm in males and 4-6.5 cm in females.
