Cat Island in the Bahamas • Earth.com

Today’s Image of the Day comes thanks to the NASA Earth Observatory and features a look at Cat Island in the Bahamas.

Though the Commonwealth of the Bahamas contains 29 islands, 661 cays, and 2,387 islets, Cat Island is the one considered by many to be the mostly likely candidate for where Christopher Columbus may have first landed.

The island, formerly known as San Salvador, also contains Mount Alvernia, the highest point in all of the Bahamas. The mountain is located on the southeastern side of the island and measures approximately 206 feet above sea level.
