Cape Canaveral on the Space Coast

04-16-2021

Cape Canaveral on the Space Coast Today’s Video of the Day from the European Space Agency features Cape Canaveral, which is both a cape and city in Brevard County, Florida.

Cape Canaveral is home to the Kennedy Space Center, and the region is known as the Space Coast. The cape is separated from the mainland by the Banana River, Merritt Island, and the Indian River.

Next week on Earth Day, French ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet will return to the International Space Station for his second mission, Alpha.

Thomas will be the first ESA astronaut to fly on a SpaceX Crew Dragon launching on a Falcon 9 rocket. His crew will include NASA astronauts Shane Kimbrough and Megan McArthur and JAXA astronaut Akihiko Hoshide, Other features of the cape include Port Canaveral, one of the busiest cruise ports in the world, and the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse. The city of Cape Canaveral lies just south of the Port Canaveral District. Also The hurricane of August 1885, rushed in this huge amount of water causing the barrier island (elevation, 3.1 m (10 ft)) devastating Cape Canaveral and adjacent areas. The ocean waves flooded the homesteaders and discouraged further settlement in the area. The beach near the lighthouse was severely eroded prompting its relocation 1.6 km (0.99 mi) west inland
