New study challenges conventional ideas of how tsunamis form

07-08-2017

Today’s Video of the Day comes thanks to NASA Goddard and features a look at a new study that is challenging the conventional theory of how tsunamis form.

Tsunamis are usually created as a result of the movement of the sea floor during an earthquake. It had previously been thought that only vertical sea floor displacement could trigger a tsunami. But this study revealed that horizontal displacement also contributes to the force of the wave.
