Detecting ovarian cancer in its earliest stages

11-20-2018

Today’s Video of the Day from EurekAlert introduces a new technique that may help experts to detect ovarian cancer in its earliest stages.

Dr. Quing Zhu is a professor of Biomedical Engineering and Radiology at Washington University in St. Louis.

She explained that it is difficult to detect ovarian cancer in the early stages because the symptoms are not very specific, and some women have no symptoms at all.

The new technique uses laser light to illuminate tissue. Any cancerous tissue will absorb more light and will generate heat that triggers distinctive acoustic signals, which can alert doctors to the presence of malignant tissue.

Ovarian cancer is the fifth deadliest for all cancers among women.
