Developing solid-state batteries

07-02-2019

Today’s Video of the Day from the Georgia Institute of Technology describes how researchers are working to develop a new battery that uses all solid materials.

Solid-state batteries could offer improved safety and more energy density compared to traditional batteries.

Study co-author Matthew McDowell is an assistant professor in the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering.

“Solid-state batteries could be safer than lithium-ion batteries and potentially hold more energy, which would be ideal for electric vehicles and even electric aircraft,” said Professor McDowell. “Technologically, it’s a very fast moving field, and there are a lot of companies interested in this.”
