Floodbot uses social media to issue flash flood warnings Today’s Video of the Day from the National Science Foundation describes Floodbot, new technology that will serve as an early warning system for flash floods.

A University of Maryland, Baltimore County team is testing their early alert system in Ellicott City, where two “100 year floods” devastated the community in both 2016 and 2018. Evacuate when advised by authorities or if you are in a flood or flash flood prone area. If you are on high ground above flooded areas, being prepared to stay where you are may be the best protection. Never drive or walk through flooded streets. Always make sure to get help with animals and elders as well, and have the national weather emergency number on hand.

Floodbot uses sensors to monitor water levels at critical flood points. The system uses social media to issue alerts to residents, and can tweet on its own when there is a flood threat. Impact-Based Warnings (IBWs) are designed to improve communication Each Flash Flood Warning.

Therefore will contain a bulleted format of easily readable information describing the flash flood, the source of the information (e.g., radar, gauge, trained spotter, Emergency Manager), and a brief description of the impact of the flash flood. Floodbot uses social media to issue flash flood warnings as seen above in the video shows the horrible flooding that occured, with the city and terrain covered in muddy water.
