Does gum stick to your stomach for years if you swallow it?

04-14-2017

Today’s Video of the Day comes from the American Chemical Society’s Reactions series and answers the age-old question: if you swallow gum, does it stick to your stomach for years?

Gum has four main ingredients: sugar, flavoring, softening and bulking agents, and a rubber polymer base. Unfortunately, your stomach doesn’t have an enzyme capable of breaking down the rubber polymer. Your stomach acid won’t be able to dissolve the rubber either.

Although your body can’t fully digest the gum, it won’t simply hang out in your stomach for years. Like many things we eat but can’t digest, your body simply moves the gum through your digestive tract, and passes it when you go to the bathroom.
