How are space missions designed?

09-14-2020

Today’s Video of the Day from the European Space Agency describes how space missions and spacecrafts are designed.

Massimo Bandecchi is the founding father of the Concurrent Design Facility (CDF), where most ESA missions are conceived.

Bandecchi explains that specialists across many different disciplines are needed to design each part of a space mission.

These experts must properly share the information that is needed to design an optimal system, rather than separate subsystems.

Instead of the team members working isolated in separate labs, Bandecchi decided to use a concurrent approach to bring the team together in the CDF where they can successfully coordinate their work.
