Acetic acid is frequently released by the microbes that live on rotting fruit.
According to the experts, the best way to get rid of fruit flies is to seal off their access to any fruits and to bait a trap with beer, wine, or apple cider vinegar.
Update: Earth.com reader Dr. Richard recommends adding a small amount of liquid soap to the mixture to break the surface tension of the solution so that the fly reaches it.
