Economic impacts of COVID-19 are visible from space

05-22-2020

Today’s Video of the Day from the European Space Agency describes the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, some of which are visible from space.

Satellite data reveals how various sectors of the economy have been affected by lockdowns.

In particular, COVID-19 restrictions have had an enormous impact on transportation and the food supply chain.

In Europe, the agricultural industry relies heavily on migrant workers who are currently unable to cross closed borders. Some farmers have been forced to let crops go unharvested and are unable to plant new crops.

The COVID-19 crisis could lead to produce shortages and drive up food prices, but the most devastating consequences will be for farmers, who have already been hit hard by extreme droughts in recent years.

According to the ESA, Earth observation programs could play a pivotal role in making the global food supply more sustainable.
