Investigating the Earth's ionosphere

08-13-2018

Today’s Video of the Day from NASA Science News introduces two new missions that will provide experts with critical insight into the Earth’s atmosphere.

A region of the atmosphere above the clouds that extends out to space, known as the ionosphere, responds to weather in space as well as the weather occurring on our planet below.

The ionosphere is constantly changing, and understanding what drives this variability will be the primary goal of two NASA missions – the Ionospheric Connection Explorer (ICON) and the Global-scale Observations of the Limb and Disk (GOLD).

The combination of these powerful tools will give scientists the most comprehensive coverage of the ionosphere that has ever been available.

GOLD was launched on January 25, 2018, and ICON will be launched later this year.
