NASA releases new global map of Earth at night

04-13-2017

Today’s Video of the Day comes from the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and features the newest global map of Earth at night.

Images of the Earth at night, also known as “night lights,” can be an extremely useful research tool. The map allows scientists to study a variety of human activities, observe how cities expand, estimate energy usage, and help in disaster relief.

The research team, led by Miguel Román of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, is now working on new algorithms and software to provide even more accurate, high-definition imagery.
