Popping a balloon using orange juice

Today’s Video of the Day from the American Chemical Society series Reactions shows us how to pop a balloon using the chemicals found in orange peels and other common household items.

Orange peels contain a compound known as limonene, which is a hydrocarbon. Limonene is not only responsible for the incredible smell of oranges, but also has a chemical structure that enables the oil to pop a balloon on contact.
