The science behind pepper spray

02-07-2020

Today’s Video of the Day from the American Chemical Society describes the science behind pepper spray and what to do if you actually get sprayed with it.

Pepper spray is designed to be so potent that a single shot of it can debilitate a person for more than an hour.

The active ingredient is capsaicin, and pepper spray has up to ten times the concentration of capsaicin as a habanero seed.

If pepper spray makes contact with your eyes and face, you need a sterile solution such as saline solution or milk of magnesia, which will make the capsacin easier to rinse off.
