The science of shaving cream

02-02-2019

Today’s Video of the Day from the American Chemical Society series Reactions describes the science of aerosol shaving cream, which was introduced in 1949.

Shaving cream not only lubricates the skin but also cleans it, because it is essentially soap in a can. Soap contains surfactant molecules that are able to hold on to oil and dirt to wash them away.

While bar soap creates foam that dissolves too quickly for shaving, specialized shaving cream is formulated to create a long-lasting lather with lots of tiny bubbles.
