Water vapor detected on a distant planet

09-12-2019

Today’s Video of the Day from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center describes the first-ever evidence of water vapor in the atmosphere of a planet beyond our solar system.

The exoplanet K2-18b, discovered by NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope in 2015, lies within the habitable zone of its host star.

K2-18b has a mass eight times greater than Earth’s, which means its surface gravity is also much larger.

The exoplanet is the only one of its kind that is known to have both water and temperatures that could support life.
