October rainfall causes intense flooding in central Texas

Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory shows intense flooding in central Texas after a series of storms dumped record rainfall across the region in September and October.

A state of disaster was declared for 111 Texas counties as lakes and rivers flooded, and one river even flowed backwards.

According to the National Weather Service, the Dallas Fort Worth Airport recorded 15.66 inches of rain in October, making it the wettest October on record.

This false-color image of flooding along the Nueces River near Calallen was captured on November 1, 2018 by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8.
