Professor Ruggles told the BBC that it was likely a priest “who watched the Sun rise or set, while in the plaza next door the crowds were feasting.” So even though the ceremonial crowds could’ve seen the Sun, they wouldn’t have witnessed it rise from that all-important vantage point.
