Today’s Image of the Day comes from the NASA Earth Observatory and features a look at the wide variety of vegetation elevations in Africa’s Great Escarpment.

The Great Escarpment is a formation located in the central Southern African plateau consisting of steep slopes, deep valleys, and sharp ridges. In a paper published in Remote Sensing of Environment, a team of scientists created this image to reflect the wide variety of tree elevations in this region. The map was created using satellite data from IceSat, Landsat 7, and Landsat 8.

The graphic allowed scientists to analyze which areas have suffered most from deforestation and also identify areas where plantations have brought tree growth to former grasslands.
