Water works • Earth.com

The way it works is as follows: wind makes the windmill turn, and it functions as a lever for the pump. The pump pulls up water from aquifers, which aren’t far below the ground, and it gushes into tanks. When the tanks are full, the windmill’s disconnected from the pump, which comes to a halt. Windmills can irrigate fields in this manner as well. Photo Credit: Hulton-Deutsch Collection/CORBIS/Corbis via Getty Images
