Using balloon probes to learn more about tornadoes

09-24-2017

In the 1996 film Twister, storm chasers release data-gathering instruments into the funnel of a tornado to learn more about the storm. Today’s Video of the Day features two Penn State professors who are releasing their own instruments into possible tornado storms. The difference, though, is that instead of getting equipment into a tornado, these researchers are focusing on mapping the 3D variations in temperature at the time of the storm to better understand how they form.
