Earth from space: the snow covered mountains of Sicily

03-06-2017

Today’s Video of the Day comes thanks to the European Space Agency’s Earth from Space series and features an incredible view of the snow covered mountains of Sicily.

The images come from the Sentinel-2A satellite during a period of unusually heavy snowfall, leaving the snow covered mountains of Sicily especially visible in white. While northern Italy has seen relatively little snow this winter, central and southern Italy have experienced colder-than-usual temperatures and a high volume of snow. Active volcano Mount Etna is visible in the upper right corner of the image, located where the African tectonic plate slides under the Eurasian Plate.
