We all know that eating yogurt is good for digestion, but it turns out that it could also be good for your mental health. Today’s Video of the Day explains how a probiotic found in yogurt can actually reverse symptoms of depression.
According to a new study performed by researchers from the University of Virginia School of Medicine, the probiotic Lactobacillus, which is commonly found in yogurt, was shown to reverse symptoms of depression in mice. The team also was able to identify the specific biologic mechanism that allows the bacteria to alter mood.
According to the World Health Organization, over 350 million people worldwide suffer from a form of depression. The researchers are hopeful that this new probiotic discovery could lead to new strategies for treating the condition.
The results of the study were reported in a paper published in the journal Scientific Reports.
