It is endemic to Hawaii, where it is known only from the island of Kauai. It is threatened by the degradation and destruction of its habitat. It is a federally listed endangered species of the United States.Schiedea membranacea is found from about 1600 to just over 3800 feet in moist, rocky sites and bases of cliffs in mesic forest. This endengered species is endemic to north and west Kauaʻi.
