Today’s Image of the Day comes thanks to the European Space Agency and features a look at Africa’s sub-Saharan Sahel.
The image highlights how the annual rainy season, which lasts from February until September has allowed lush vegetation to blossom across the African Sahel. This region spans over 5000 kilometers across the continent, from the Atlantic ocean on the west to the Red Sea on the east.
“Sahel” is an Arabic word that means coast or shore.
