Today’s Image of the Day comes thanks to the European Space Agency and features a look at a phytoplankton bloom off the coast of Belgium.

This image was captured by the Sentinel-2A satellite using a high-resolution multispectral instrument that specializes in monitoring water activity near the shoreline.

This phytoplankton bloom was most likely phaeocystis globosa, which is a non-toxic algae that does not deplete oxygen levels due to the turbulence of these waters. It does, however, create a foam that accumulates on the beaches which is a nuisance to both beach-goers and fishermen.
