Yellowstone is a wonderful place to learn about hunter-gatherer societies, as the land hasn’t been shaped and damaged by contemporary development in the way that most other places have. Still, though, MacDonald can feel conflicted about researching the area. As he put it, “There’s an irony to this. We kicked Native Americans out of Yellowstone to make a park.
