The aftermath of Cyclone Debbie in Australia

Today’s Image of the Day comes thanks to the NASA Earth Observatory and features a look at the damaging flooding in Queensland, Australia caused by Cyclone Debbie.

As we reported last week, Cyclone Debbie brought with it severe flooding and the evacuation of tens of thousands of people in northern New South Wales and southern Queensland. The floodwaters have since caused the region’s rivers and waterways to swell as they flow down into the Coral Sea. The light blue color of the water is caused by large amounts of sediment that have been kicked up by the storm.

This image was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite.
