This venerable woman was photographed in 1888, when she was said to be almost 100 years old. She was Cheyenne – one of the so-called Plains Indian peoples who lived in the lands between the Arkansas and Platte rivers. From 1857, members of the tribe came into direct and often bitter conflict with white settlers and U.S. soldiers. The Cheyenne got revenge of a sort, though, at the Battle of Little Big Horn.
