Cumbre Vieja eruption continues in the Canary Islands

Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features a bullseye-shaped cloud hovering over the island of La Palma, where the Cumbre Vieja volcano has been erupting since September 19, 2021.

On October 2, the Canary Islands Volcanology Institute (INVOLCAN) reported an increase in explosive activity. Despite this increase, Cumbre Vieja’s explosivity is ranked as “moderate” – a 2 out of 8 on the Volcanic Explosivity Index.

According to NASA, the eruption has not been energetic enough to inject large amounts of ash and gases into the stratosphere, where they can have strong and lasting effects on weather and climate.

The image was captured on October 1 by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite.
