Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features smoke rising from deadly fires in northern Algeria. By Monday, 65 people had been killed.

Local media reports claim that at least 86 blazes are yet to be contained across 17 different provinces of the country.

According to NASA, some of the worst fires have occurred in mountain areas near Bejaia and Tizi-Ouzou.

The image was captured on August 10, 2021 by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite.
