The Robinsons decided to open up Niihau to tourists in order to offset the cost of the helicopter that they run, which ferries residents off the island in the case of emergencies. “The limited tourism that we’re doing now is good in that it helps to defray that cost,” Robinson explained. “But the real benefit to us is that its low impact.
