Sunset at the International Space Station

Today’s Image of the Day comes thanks to the NASA Earth Observatory and features a look at sunset at the International Space Station.

The photo was taken by astronauts over the Indian Ocean and shows a unique view of the different layers of the Earth’s atmosphere.

The orange and yellow layers represent the troposphere, which stretches from the Earth’s surface to 6 – 20 kilometers high.

The pink and white layers represent the lower stratosphere, which stretches up to 50 kilometers above the Earth’s surface and usually contains very few clouds.
